Natural tombolo

Tombolos are created by the construction of offshore structure like breakwaters. These formed beaches protect the shoreline behind and create sufficient beach spaces for recreation. This photo shows an amazing tombolo formed naturally, a testimony to the theory of "coastal dynamics". The area is just to the south of an estuary called Manjeswaram, situated in Kerala state in India. Two satellite maps of the region (courtesy Google earth) are available for more information (the lat-long values can be seen from it). Littoral transport in the region is found to be from north to the south and also plenty of sediment load is transported to the estuarine area by the rivers discharging into the sea. These transported sediments are the source of material trapped behind the natural rock formation.
