Storm waterway at Miya-jima - Japan

AD 1150 - Storm waterway below Senjò-kaku wooden hall on 19 Nov. 2001. The stepped chute is steep (slope > 45 deg., h ~ 0.4 m). The Senjò-kaku wooden hall was built by Kyomori (AD 1168) and left unfinished at his death. It is likely that the waterway design dates from the 12th century.
